Blue Shield of California is a West Coast health plan and independent licensee of the Blue Shield Association. Founded in 1939 and based in San Francisco, California, Blue Shield serves more than 4 million members and works with approximately 65,000 doctors across California. BSC was one of the founders of the National Association of Blue Shield Plans (later named the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association).
